PeePaw’s Back in Town!
Peepaw is back in town! It’s been awhile since his last visit, so we were overjoyed when Peepaw told us he was able to come for a visit. Dez and I would love to think we are the reason for Peepaw’s visit…but we know that his main reason for coming is to see his precious granddaughter, Elliana! Now don’t get me wrong, he loves visiting with us, but it has been a couple of months since he has seen her and she has changed so much in that short period of time!
Peepaw was blown away by Elli! She is crawling all over the place. You take your eye off for a second and she could be in the next room with how much she likes to move. Elle Belle loves to try to speak now as well. She has nailed her “dada” and “mama” and is working on others like “dog”…problem is that dog is sounding a lot like “dada”…I’ll try not to read anything into that…She is now working to say “Peepaw” and we can really hear the “p” sound followed by some spit that ends up on anyone nearby!
Elli even decided to share a new milestone with Peepaw. During one of the times we put her down for a nap, she decided she would learn to sit up on her own in bed. Scary and cool at the same time, but it was awesome for Peepaw to be a part of Elliana’s achievements!
Even though Peepaw is my dad, he has a special bond with Desiree. He loves drinking coffee and talking to Desiree about pretty much anything. That is something Desiree used to do with her Poppa all the time. She had a very special relationship with her grandfather and even though my dad is younger than her late grandfather, he is of a very similar generation. My dad LOVES the fact that she had a close bond with her Poppa and loves how she values the older generation. I truly think he would just come and stay for the conversation alone, even though he lives 4 hours away! 🙂
What’s on the Menu?
When I spoke with Peepaw on the phone a few days before his visit, we discussed what we would be eating for the weekend. He knew that I had been eating a lot healthier and working out a lot, so he hesitantly asked what we were having to eat when he visits. I made the mistake of telling him we were going to eat healthy meals. I could hear his enthusiasm deflate on the other end of the phone. Naturally, we decided to just focus on enjoying our time with some good (unhealthy) food.
Dez is a wizard in the kitchen and creates tons of wonderful things that I enjoy daily. She had some new creations for Peepaw to enjoy.
The first night we enjoyed homemade meatballs and sauce accompanied with toasted ravioli. She had never made toasted ravioli before, but it turned out to be fantastic! Cheesy and with a perfect crunch, they stood little chance of lasting long with Peepaw and I going after them!
The next morning we woke to a wonderful surprise of Dez making us homemade donuts. Trust me when I tell you, they tasted better than any donuts I have ever had. She made a few different varieties, including glazed, sprinkled with chocolate, and some rolled in granulated sugar. All three were delicious! She made her own glaze for her donuts, which not even Krispy Kreme donuts could rival! She even made the donut holes that she cut out! Those donuts didn’t stand a chance! Check out the recipe for the donuts here! Seriously, check it out! They’re THAT good!
Another awesome breakfast that Dez, made for us was some delicious French toast. Along with that we made sure to purchase some pané torano, an awesome toast bread that Peepaw used to eat all the time with his father. Nothing like some awesome toast with a side of nostalgia to start the morning off right!
Dez knows that Peepaw is a huge fan of good soup, so before his arrival, she made sure to make a batch of homemade chicken noodle soup. The broth was amazing and the soup was filled with carrots, celery, chicken and egg noodles. Everything played so well off of one another, Peepaw and I couldn’t resist getting seconds.
Now for a couple of the evenings, Peepaw wanted to treat us for dinner. He knows that Dez’s favorite restaurant is Texas Roadhouse. Getting to spend great, quality family time with Peepaw in a friendly environment with incredible food makes for the perfect evening. With great conversation and being entertained by the cutest girl in the world, how could we not have a wonderful time?
We also had a craving for Pizza Hut, so we went there the last evening Peepaw was in town. Like always, Elliana was the life of the party and had the attention and smiles of everyone in the place. Dez and I both used to work at Pizza Hut when we were younger, so we always exchanged stories of how it was when we used to work there. There is always something special about the experience of actually eating there. So many times we like eating pizza at home, but a fresh pizza and cheese sticks out of the oven at Pizza Hut is hard to replicate.
When you have a weekend like this, particularly as far as food goes, you always make for a fun, delicious and memorable weekend!
What Family Time Means to Me.
Dez and I desperately want to move closer to family. There are many special family events that we have to miss because we live a decent distance away from family. It stinks we can’t just pop in for an evening and have dinner with family. So when we get an opportunity to see family, whether we visit or they do, we try to cherish every moment.
When Peepaw visits, we look forward to a number of things that we know will happen. Peepaw loves giving advice about things we are going through or things that we might encounter. We love the fact that he is always trying to help us or teach us something that we might need help with. He has not stopped his job of being a father since the first day he became one. Words can’t express how much it means to have a father be a role model to me as a new father.
Peepaw always loves watching the news and discussing what is going on with the world. I’m not going to bring up the political talks and debates we have, but it is always spirited and at the end, no matter what we may think, we always enjoy those times. He will also put on old TV shows whenever he gets the chance. Magically, I’ll step out of the room for a little bit and somehow the channel changes to some old western I had never heard of or I’ll wonder if my TV is broken because he’ll be watching a program in black and white. 🙂 I’ll laugh about it, but at the same time, Dez will catch me watching old sitcoms I used to love growing up in the 90’s.
Peepaw also loves to help out with areas that I struggle. Not that he is a handy man, but compared to me he is Bob Vila. Dez and I are child-proofing our house and needed to anchor our TV to the wall. Not a difficult task but he brought a drill and showed us how to properly install it. We didn’t want to risk using our own skills at the cost of Elli’s safety. Those little teaching moments are always something that we will remember.
Overall, we had such a wonderful time with PeePaw. Dez, Elli, Scamp and I can’t wait to see him again! But next on the list is Grammy! We want to share those wonderful times with her as well. They are unable to come together to visit because of the health and age of their dog Murphy, so someone always has to stay at home. But no matter what family visits, that quality time is ultimately the thing we value the most in this world!
