Hot Lunch > Cold Lunch
Being a high school teacher, it is very important to have a good plan for lunch. I used to be fortunate enough to go home for lunch since I lived so closely to my school. I would go home and enjoy a nice warm lunch and be ready to finish off the rest of the school day. Recently, my circumstances at work have changed and I need to stay at work during my lunch period. So I was left with some not so pleasant lunch options…
Option 1 – Buy a school lunch
If I consumed a school lunch 5 days a week for an entire school year, I doubt I would live past the age of 45…Regardless of what Michelle Obama tried to do with school lunches and trying to make them healthy, they are still serving garbage for the most part that I wouldn’t serve to my worst enemy.
Option 2 – Bring a cold lunch
Normally, this isn’t a terrible option. But since I have been spoiled for so long with hot lunches to enjoy, the days of the sandwich, apple and crackers just aren’t going to cut it anymore. The role of lunch is to rejuvenate and prepare for the second half of the day. A cold lunch just doesn’t fulfill the role that lunch is supposed to play.
Option 3 – Use a microwave at school
As you were reading you might have been thinking…why not just use a microwave??
There are some annoying things about the microwave, especially trying to use a community one at work. Not only is it annoying during lunchtime to fight for position on who gets to use the microwave next, it also rarely heats my lunch properly. The outsides of the meal are always really hot but the insides are cold, or if I try to prevent that from happening I end up creating a ridiculously hot lunch that burns my mouth.
Plus, have you seen the inside of most community microwaves? I’ll pass…
I would love to take credit for finding this solution for the perfect hot lunch, but Dez was the brilliant mind behind it. We have enjoyed many meals with our crockpot at home. But I had no idea that there was a mini crockpot that will warm up leftovers!!!
This thing is AMAZING!
It has a metal liner with a lid that you put your food in.
Dez puts my meal in it and stores it in the fridge overnight. I bring the liner to school and pop it inside the crock pot warmer (I keep the warmer base at school…so convenient!). About an hour before I am going to eat lunch, I plug it in. When it is lunchtime, I get to enjoy a hot meal!
There is no messing with a temperature gauge, it just warms the meal without drying it out or burning it on the sides.
It is so light and portable you barely notice you are bringing it with you and it holds a sizable portion. This has changed the way I think of my “school lunch” into something I genuinely look forward to each day.
Plus, it makes it so easy for me to stay on track with my eating. Dez prepares a delicious and healthy meal fills me up and rejuvenates me for the second half of the day. Let’s face it, when we are at work, regardless of what we do, we all could benefit from boost part way through the day.
It’s convenient, light and affordable. And it is super easy to clean up.
Try it- you’ll love it! Trust me when I say, your lunch experiences will never be the same again!
